Conditions We Treat

Cerebral palsy (CP)

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder affecting movement and posture. It appears in the early stages of a child’s development due to damage to a part of the brain tissue, and its symptoms can worsen with age. Cerebral palsy can present differently in each child, taking various forms such as quadriplegia, diplegia, or hemiplegia.

The condition is characterized by symptoms such as muscle stiffness and tension, unsteady movements, dystonia, and athetosis. Early diagnosis in a child’s life focuses on monitoring age-appropriate motor development, including sitting, changing body positions, and crawling.

Cerebral palsy requires treatment to prevent the child’s condition from deteriorating and leading to severe disability. At the Paley European Institute, we specialize in the treatment of cerebral palsy. Our treatments include reconstructive surgery of the hip joints, foot reconstruction, corrective osteotomy of the femur, and the use of orthotic devices.

Cerebral palsy treated at the Paley European Institute

At the Paley European Institute, we perform single-event multilevel surgery (SEMLS) for the surgical treatment of children and adults with cerebral palsy. This procedure aims to correct muscle imbalance, contractures, and musculoskeletal deformities resulting from central nervous system damage. It addresses primary issues such as muscle imbalance, weakened muscle strength, altered muscle tone, and limited or impaired selective movement.

Postoperative care for individuals with neurological conditions also involves a significant role in physiotherapy. In this particular case, we aim to teach the central nervous system to utilize new possibilities. We develop individualized postoperative rehabilitation programs, specifically tailored to our patients’ needs, which are meticulously implemented. The key to successful treatment lies in time, as well as the full cooperation of the family and the entire team of specialists.

Cerebral palsy is a condition that hinders daily functioning, making it worthwhile to seek assistance from the Paley European Institute. Pediatric orthopedics is our specialty. We provide our patients with the highest level of care and support, both physically and psychologically. We encourage you to get in touch with us!

For patients with Cerebral Palsy, we offer not only highly specialized surgeries and individualized physiotherapy programs, but also detailed marker-based gait analysis (for patients who can walk independently or with equipment support). Our team also provides custom-made multifunctional orthotics. In addition, the patient can also take advantage of offers for orthotic shoes, positioning mattresses, as well as essential orthotic equipment (wheelchair, walker, stander, tripod, etc.). During interdisciplinary consultations, we develop a comprehensive lifelong treatment plan and our specialists can also help properly adjust the equipment.
